I watched a special on HBO while stuck in my house due to an ice storm this weekend. It was called “Every Brilliant Thing”, and it’s definitely worth checking out. But, it inspired me. I want to start making a list of every brilliant thing to me in life. Everything that makes life worth living.

It’s no secret that I struggle with depression. I have for over half of my life, now. Usually, I manage just fine. But some days, it gets to me. It’s like a poison spreading through my system, leaving me weak. I can’t find the light, and that’s my biggest problem in that state of mind: I’m lost in the darkness, and cannot find the good to pull me out of it.

So, I’m giving myself a list of things. Things to read and remember what makes me even slightly happy. I’m giving myself a way out of the darkness.

Let’s start by cheating a bit with my list of things I was thankful for a few posts ago:

1.) Movie nights with someone you love.

2.) My Batman collection.

3.) My nieces.

4.) Fur babies.

5.) Feeling inspired.

6.) Productive nights of insomnia.

7.) Feeling accomplished.

8.) Qdoba nacho dates with my  best friend.

9.) The hunt for collection things.

10.) Long calls with your favorite person.

11.) Clear nights with the moon and stars shining bright.

12.) Hoodie weather.

13.) Nature walks / Hikes.

14.) Road trips with good company and good music.

15.) The exhilaration on your favorite rides.

16.) Doing something kind for someone else, and knowing they appreciated it.

17.) Knowing this was the first December in a few years I didn’t have a surgery scheduled.

18.) The catalyst of meeting Kevin Smith a little over one year ago.

19.) Filling up a box of comics.

20.) The excitement of somewhere new.

21.) Being so happy that I can’t stop the big, dorky grins.

22.) Painting with music blaring days.

23.) Adventure.

24.) Chinese food.

25.) Supporting the dreams and projects of others.

26.) The Bat Force / Bat Force Radio while working on my collection.

27.) Naps.

28.) My fandoms.

29. ) People equally passionate about the same things I am.

30.) Good memories.

31.) Cards Against Humanity nights.

32.) My closest friends.

33.) My BEST friend.

34.) Everything about a certain someone.

Now, let’s add a few more on, to make it a proper new post:

35.) Meeting your heroes.

36.) Comic Cons

37.) Finding new movies you absolutely love.

38.) The song that becomes Our Song

39.) Comfy socks.

40.) The first day of feeling better after being sick.

41.) Peanut Butter M&Ms

42.) Art days after school in high school, working on projects with people that meant the world to me.

43.) Hot apple cider in my Ouija mug when I’m sick.

44.) Good, long conversations.

45.) Dressing up as Harley Quinn

46.) Poetry

47.) The work of Charles Bukowski

48.) Unexpected gifts of things you want, but didn’t ask for.

49.) When the person you fall in love with, falls in love with you.

50.) Happy dances.

There we have it. My first 50 things. I hope to read through them when I’m down, and then add to them, and hopefully use this tool to pull myself back out of the grips of depression.

I’m not a single bit surprised that 2016 is off to a rough start. It’s almost a tradition at this point: go into it hopeful, get knocked down so fast my head spins. Because by “rough start”, I mean that it has been made very clear to me that this coming year will make or break me. And I refuse to let it break me, no matter how hard everything is trying to. All good news fades. All steps forward seem like they haven’t mattered. I am no closer to anything than I was before. If anything, I’ve fallen back several steps.

But, I push forward:

+ I’m working hard at my Wandering NerdGirl blog, in hopes that my nerdy adventures can be more productive. Cons, Orlando, other nerd-tastic events… I’m on it.

+ I’m writing again, period. I was so down and depressed Tuesday, reading about the market and what agents and publishers don’t want right now, blah blah. I’m a very critical person on myself, so of course I instantly decide everything I write is garbage and I should give up. But for some reason, one of my favorite story ideas popped into my brain, and I had a lot of interesting new ideas for it. Since it hasn’t actually been written yet, it will be a good exercise in writing again. I’ve spent so long in editing and rewriting hell, I haven’t had much time or opportunity for new creation. I’ve mostly been jotting notes down and what not, or writing a few specific scenes that some to mind. But as soon as I get my thoughts together, I’m running with it. I’ll hammer out my first draft, as intimidating as that feels right now. I won’t lose my dream. I’m going to write this book for me, and see where that takes me.

+ I have been drawing. Well, the last day or two I haven’t been. But I will excuse that because I have started a huge, new painting of Poe Dameron’s helmet from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s all pretty exciting, considering I was very close to just getting rid of a lot of my art stuff to save space.

+ I have my eyes on new projects. Bigger projects. More projects. I have plans to go beyond what I have done and make something new all the time. New shoots, new types of projects, new ideas. It’s all very vague to you guys right now because I’m not jumping in with both feet just yet, so there isn’t much information to share. Just cross your fingers that I make the time to pull it all off.

+ My collection is growing. My collection is a tiny beast, but it is my tiny beast. I know I’ve been slacking on the Collection Haul posts, and if you’d like to see them again, I could start back up this month or in February. There have been quite a few additions. And as stupid or trivial or whatever it sounds, one of my goals for the year is to really build my collection up. I take great pride in my Batman stuff. Someday I’ll have a massive assortment of various Batman items properly displayed.  For now, it steadily grows.

+ I’ve been trying to figure out how to get back to college, and exactly what I want to do when I get back. I was going to start again Fall 2015 but my financial aid decided to be complicated. So maybe Fall 2016 or Spring 2017. Who knows. Going back genuinely frightens me at this point. But I would still like to try.

So, you have a basic rundown of my game plan for the year. Obviously, subject to change. But hopefully, this year I rise from the ashes and become closer to where I was before.

bb40 bb41

These may be my strangest haul from the month – Batman Forever key chains, made in 1995 by Applause. One Two-Face, one Robin. What makes this especially weird is that I picked them up in my hotel gift shop when I was in Orlando. It was definitely one of the strangest hotel gift shops I’ve ever been in, but totally cool.

bb42 bb43

This is technically a Christmas present, buuuuuut…. I’m impatient. Catwoman “Almost Got ‘Im” bust, black and white SDCC 2015 exclusive. Based on Batman the Animated Series.

bb8

This is probably my pride and joy – not just of the haul for the month, but in general. I’ve wanted this bust for SO LONG, but the price on it has skyrocketed along with Harley’s popularity. This bust is hard to get for less than like $700. But I successfully did it, and she is perfect. She’s 109 of 500 made.

Alright, that does it for month two. Hope you guys enjoy the haul pictures! Drop me a comment if you have any questions and I’ll help you to the best of my abilities!

~Angel

So, here we go – my very first monthly haul post for my collection! Well, aside from the birthday/con post. If you like this post, please let me know, and I’ll keep them going! Now, let’s get started:

b1

Batgirl Mopeez plush

b2

Joker Mopeez plush

b3

Okay, technically, this one is from the end of August, but I was really excited to finally own it, so I want to share it anyway! Haha. This is the Complete 1940’s Movie Serials Collection. In the 1940s, before Adam West took up the cowl, two other men played the role of Batman: Lewis Wilson (Batman 1943) and Robert Lowery (Batman and Robin 1949) in 15 chapter movie serials. These weren’t the greatest things ever made, by far, and that’s probably part of why people don’t talk about them as much. But this is part of Batman’s early history, and a necessity in my opinion for any Batman collector.

b4

I really wanted more of the Riddler in my collection, so I ordered this Riddler bust bank, and I love him!

b5

This Harley Quinn head bank is seriously HUGE. Like, lifesize head. But I adore it!

b6

However, this is a tiny snow globe. Probably around the size of a baseball in the globe itself. Either way, it’s adorable.

b7

Batgirl Ame-Comi figure. I really love Batgirl, so adding a few things with her this month has made me pretty happy.

b8

MORE BATMOBILE! I love adding larger scale Batmobiles to my collection.

b9

Harley Quinn Sunglasses

b10

Batman and Robin Mopeez! Finally have all the Batman ones I wanted.

b11

Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Batman lip balms.

b12

NECA Scalers -Dark Knight

b13

Limited edition Catwoman (from Batman: the Animated Series) “Itty Bitty” plush from Hallmark.

b14

“Gotham” Season One on DVD

b15

Batman Forever and Batman and Robin soundtracks.

b16

SDCC 2015 Exclusive Gotham Minimates, featuring Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne.

b17

VHS copies of Batman and Batman Returns.

b18 b19

Batman: Arkham Knight Collector’s Edition strategy guide, and four character lithographs: Batman, Arkham Knight, Scarecrow, and the Batmobile.

b20

The Dorbz figures really live up to their name because they’re ADORABLE. I added Killer Croc (far right) this month, so I’m all caught up until more are released, not including the Dorbz XL Batman and Robin just released.

b21

Limited Edition Joker Itty Bitty from Hallmark

b22

Batgirl cape and Batman utility belt waist cinch, both from Spirit Halloween.

b23

New Suicide Squad graphic novel. I count this among my Batman collection mostly because of Harley Quinn’s involvement as a main character.

b24

Harley Quinn playing cards.

b25

Man, I LOOOOVE the Vinyl Vixen line from Vinyl Sugar. Such gorgeous pieces! Here’s my new Batgirl.

b26

SDCC 2015 Exclusive Harley Quinn and Joker minis.

b27

New Harley Quinn mini bust, styled after her look in Suicide Squad.

b28 b30 b31 b32 b33

Batman movie novelizations: Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, and Batman Begins.

b35

The New Batman Adventures bendable Batman figure.

b2911×17 Gotham print.

b36Joker action figure by Kenner.

b37Batman Returns playing cards.

b38 Batman trashcan and washcloths.

b39

Hot Topic Exclusive Batman: Arkham Asylum ‘Detective Mode’ Pop! Vinyl figure.

b41

Harley Quinn Arkham Knight Pop! Vinyl figure.

b42

Inflatable Harley Quinn gun.

b40

And finally, this beautiful Batman snow globe.

Now, not every month is like this. I believe there was around 42 items. Some months, there’s more stuff. Some months, less stuff. It depends on factors such as what is going on that month and what has to be paid for, or whether I buy more expensive items than cheaper stuff. I have two statues coming in this month that took up some money from my wallet, plus some other things I’ve wanted and finally ordered. So, it really varies.

If you liked this post, give it a like or drop a comment, and I can do one of these the end of every month. I’m also happy to answer questions about each item, if you’re looking for it yourself.

“Working hard is important, but there’s something that matters even more. Believing in yourself. Think of it this way: Every great wizard in history has started out as nothing more than we are now. Students. If they can do it, why not us?” – Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

hp

My body doesn’t care about what I want to do, or what I need to do. My body is an angry, vengeful creature staging a violent rebellion against me for everything I do. But I continue regardless, because things must be done, whether my body wants them done.
It makes writing difficult. It makes waking up earlier difficult. It makes focusing on projects and having the energy to complete anything difficult. It makes work difficult. It makes everything difficult. But I cope. I deal. I do my best.

I’ve spent so much time lately beating myself up for the days I can’t do the extra stuff. The days I can’t get out of bed. The days I give more to my day job than I get paid for. But being upset with myself makes matters worse. I need to be my own motivator, and instead I’m dragging myself down.

So, I will write. I will draw. I will post about Batman stuff and nerdy adventures.

Despite being horribly sick all week, I’m continuing on with work and trying desperately to find time to write. I hammered out a quick short story to get myself back into gear. It was sloppy and weird, and hummed with the influence of reintroducing horror back into my life as a regular staple.

But now, I need to get to work on more serious projects. I need to accomplish more.

I can do this. I can push though. I can be everything I want and more.

I just have to believe in myself. Why not me?

~Angel

I’ve decided to do an initial post of my Batman Collection haul idea, starting with the things I received for my birthday and what I picked up at con. If you like this post, let me know! I plan to follow up with a collection haul post for the month of September as well. Here we go!

con1

My VIP badge for Wizard World Chicago. Ben McKenzie, who plays Detective James Gordon in the Fox TV show “Gotham”

con2

Autograph from Ben McKenzie. I also have a photo of myself with him, as well as a dual photo of myself with him and Sean Pertwee, but I don’t have a good picture of that picture, so I’ll save it for my Wandering NerdGirl blog haha.

Speaking of Sean Pertwee..

con3

Seriously one of the coolest actors I’ve met. I love him in so much more, but obviously I needed a photo of him as Alfred – or “00-Alfred”, as he signed it.

con11

Picked up the DC Collectibles replica Detective badge of James Gordon from Gotham. I wanted it anyway, seemed fitting to get it on the trip.

con4

Another Batman related actor I had the pleasure of meeting was Adrienne Barbeau. Again, someone I loved for so much more, but HAD TO get her autograph on something Catwoman, since she voiced her in the Animated Series.

con7

I picked up this gorgeous Poison Ivy print from artist Greg Horn at con. Absolutely loved it and his art in general.

con10

I bought this Batman cover replica print and had Neal Adams sign it for me – something I’ve wanted to do for so long!

con12

I first heard about Travis Langley in the documentary “Legends of the Knight”, and I’ve wanted his book, “Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight”, for a while. I love Batman, I love Psychology, and I love this book so far!

con6

Batman Returns Catwoman Kenner figure I’ve wanted for some time.

con5

Final con related pick up – this Bleacher Creature Harley Quinn plush I’ve been wanting for a while.

Alright, now that we have that hurdle out of the way, let’s show a few of my beloved birthday gifts!

con15

These were from my mom, and I technically had them for a little while before my birthday, but still. Batman, Robin, and Batgirl from the 60’s Batman television show.

con14

Assorted goodies from my best friend.

con13

Badass Harley Quinn and Batman umbrella from my brother.

con8

Harley Quinn goodies from my lovely Skylar, all the way in Washington right now

con9

Finally, my beloved Harley Quinn Mopeez plush, a gift from my office manager. I ADORE HER SO MUCH. LOOK AT THAT CUTE LITTLE FACE! Ugh. Adorable.

Well, there you have it! What did you think? Any details you’d like added? Want to see more posts like this? Let me know in the comments!

writing

Sometimes, when I’m working on a single project, I can focus solely on that one project and block out every other idea bouncing about in my head. Lately, however, I’ve been lacking the focus to get everything done I need to with one project from start to finish, because I get distracted by new ideas, and then my brain cannot focus on the project at hand.

That’s where I’m at right now. I need to focus on revision edits and things, buuuuuuut this idea keeps popping into my head. So, I decided to give in and let it have some of my attention, hoping that if I could appease it by writing down my ideas, it would settle down. Nope. Ideas abundant.

But, hey – who am I to complain? Writing is writing. At this point, any writing I can get done is good. Even if it isn’t a priority project.

I’m slowly but surely making myself a main focus, as selfish as that sounds. I spend so much time devoted to work or family or friends, that I don’t save time for Angel. Not that work/friends/family shouldn’t be counted as important. But a girl has to have her time to herself, you know? My projects, my relaxing time, my time to do whatever I need or want. Sometimes I just want to watch a movie by myself while I clean my room. Most of the time I’m around other people. I’m an introvert – I need recharge time, away from people.

Not just that, though – I need to give my health priority over everything else. I need a healthier lifestyle, but the more stressed I get, the more I crave comfort foods and soda. That’s not what my body needs, and I need to focus on that more.

Something big, though it sounds odd to say, that I’ve been reintegrating back into my regular life is horror. I used to watch horror movies all the time. I read horror. I was obsessed with it. I originally really got into writing through my love of horror – that’s what my first real stories were. I started thinking about it and realized that maybe part of my slump, as strange as it sounds, could have something to do with that.

It seems to be helping thus far. I feel better and more like myself. It’s such a simple and weird solution, to just watch some horror movies and read some creepy books. But whatever it takes to make me feel better, you know?

Speaking of – my Batman collection has been getting a lot of nurturing lately, and it’s growing into something I’m really proud of and want to showcase. I’d like to do more pictures and updates on it, maybe a monthly haul post? I’m not sure yet. If you’re interested, definitely let me know!

Anyway, here I go, doing my thing: writing and watching scary movies and working and hoarding Batman stuff.

~Angel

daydreamSo, here it is:

Less than two weeks until I say goodbye to my day job.

Less that two weeks until my health, my friends, and my passions take priority again.

Less than two weeks until I’m writing books, working on photo shoots, doing new artwork.

Less than two weeks until days that I can relax if I don’t feel well and catch up on my DVR.

Less than two weeks until I can take up old hobbies again, like when I used to be an amateur magician. I know that sounds a little weird, but hey – I miss it.

Less than two weeks until I can figure out what I want to do for college.

If you want to summarize all that: Two weeks until I have my life back.

“Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by
The rules of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes
And leap”

Am I scared? Of course I am. Not having steady income is terrifying. But I’m driven by something that scares me even more – giving up on my dreams. I’ve been pushing everything that was important to me to the backburner for far too long, and I was growing comfortable with the idea of settling into a normal life. Not because it was what I wanted, but rather because it was what seemed easier. Maybe everyone is right, I would think. Maybe it’s time to grow up and accept that this dream will stay just that – a dream. And that isn’t like me. That SCARES me. If I want something, I go after it. It’s that simple.

But, I’ve got my manuscript revision finished and ready for Beta Readers and the final round(s) of editing to make it all polished and shiny. I’m booking shoots like you wouldn’t believe: some paying work, some portfolio updates, and some for designers. Not to mention finally getting back to my artwork properly, and having time for my friends again.

It also royally sucks that the coworkers I do like won’t be around every day. I know we can still get together and see each other if we want to, but it’s going to be weird not seeing each other every day like we do now. But I couldn’t stay forever, so this was bound to happen.

But at least, in the world of my art stuff, this happened:

camrenselinakyle

Camren Bicondova, the talented gal that plays a young Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in the Fox TV series Gotham, LIKED THIS PHOTO OF HER I DID! I know, in the grand scheme of things, this can’t go on a resume or really much of anything. But HOLY FANGIRL MOMENT, BATMAN! SHE LIKED IT!

Anyway, that’s it for now. More soon!

~Angel

BATMAN2

Everyone that knows me, knows that I am a Batman obsessed weirdo with a collection that is constantly growing. I’ve loved Batman since I was a little kid, and my passion has grown exponentially from there. Comics, movies, collectables, miscellaneous memorabilia… I love it all. When I was two months shy of turning two years old, Batman Returns was about to hit theaters, and I was ecstatic. My mom took my brother and I to the theater early to see it, and I could barely contain my excitement. Unfortunately, two year olds plus way too much energy beforehand PLUS sitting in a dark theater equaled me passing out in the middle, which broke my little heart. I did get to see it, and my mom bought it for me when it came out (a big deal, since we didn’t have much money at that time.) And, as shown above, Catwoman made quite an impression on me. She was my favorite for the longest time, and I had a few cool Catwoman and Batman toys. I still remember how that costume and mask felt.

Granted, if I would have been wiser when I was younger, I’d have a fortune in amazing older Batman stuff. But since I hadn’t thought of it as stuff I’d be collecting as I got older, I didn’t keep it all, or some was damaged beyond any point of keeping it. A few things made it with me to adulthood, at least. But I shake my head at the things I’ve lost.

BATMAN1

Fast forward to now. I’m constantly expanding my knowledge of the DC Universe, but more specifically Batman oriented things. I collect a variety of memorabilia, from statues and collector items, to action figures, to miscellaneous random finds. If it’s Batman, it is probably on my list of things to get. (Seriously. My Amazon Wishlist is INSANE.) Friends and coworkers are always on the lookout for items I may have missed, or just random Batman oriented gifts. You should see the neat stuff I get from Six Flags St Louis.

At the moment, I’m trying to document my collection in an album on my personal Facebook page. I started doing this just with new items I received of various nerdy things, but then separated those into two categories, giving Batman his own album. Then, I decided I’d start taking individual photos (or mostly individual photos) of the rest of my collection, with the thought in mind that this would be beneficial for myself in tracking what I have, as well as for friends and family gift shopping for me.

Until, that is, I learned there was a Guinness Book of World Records holder for largest Batman collection. Kevin Silva of Indianapolis holds the record at 2,554 pieces. His collection is AMAZING. I would be that fan that falls to her knees in tears if I saw it in person. He’s inspired me to make my collection so impressive. And, hopefully, it can even surpass his someday.

So, I’m going to begin taking inventory of exactly what I have, with photos and spreadsheets and documentation to really prove what I have. And some day, I will have a worthy collection as awesome as Kevin Silva does. He seems like one awesome guy!

Anyway, I may eventually post some of the collection on here, maybe a page up there near my Bio or something. Or, I could just link you to my on Facebook profile. Who knows?

“I think I’ll wait another year,
It’ll be the best year ever.”

If you haven’t listened to Amanda Palmer’s “Another Year”, go do it immediately. This song is on to Top 5 list of the soundtrack of my life, I swear.

tolive

Now, I have done many, many things in my life. I’ve worked in a haunted house, and a Halloween costume/supply store. I’ve left the country. Twice. Swam with dolphins. Also twice. I attended a writing conference in New York with Best Selling authors and agents and other passionate writer people like myself, and even read part of a manuscript out loud to two agents (both of which were interested in reading more) – before I started my senior year of High School. I’ve been to Orlando four times. I’ve been to Boston and Salem. I’ve been to Chicago, New Orleans, and Nashville for cons. I’ve been to James Marsters birthday party. Sean Patrick Flanery has called my boyfriend and made me blush, and just been an all around awesome dude to me. David Della Rocco kissed my cheek. I’ve met amazing actors, artists, comedians, authors, etc. I’ve met Stan Lee. Multiple times. I met Robert Englund and cried. I’ve been to Batman Live!, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and a variety of other plays and shows. I’ve had VIP passes and been allowed into areas others have dreamed of. I’ve shot fashion shows, had photos and articles published, and occasionally feel like maybe I’m going in the right direction.

And so, so much more. So many people and places I can’t even list them all.

But, I somehow still want more. I have worked myself to death to feel like I’m somewhere, or doing something, and not wasting my life behind a desk at a day job.

It feels like I have been stuck in a state of Almost Something. I have almost been published. Almost graduated with my degree as an Art major. Almost stepped up to the next level in photography. Almost almost almost. But I don’t won’t to fall short anymore. I want to move from Almost Something into Definitely Something.

So, next year, I will try to do more. I will try to top everything I’ve already done, just because I have the drive to do it. I don’t want to live an average life. It will drive me insane. I want to feel like I’ve accomplished things and lived a life I was proud of by the time I’m dead.

I’m working on a list right now of things to do in 2015. Because while 2014 had some very good things, it also had some horrible things. And I want more good days than bad. I’ll post a finished list closer to New Years Eve, but there are some points I will definitely touch on:

I will do something writing related, whether it’s a published novel, or another article. Even a baby step forward is better than a stand still.

I will work on my photography more. Because I miss it. Because I need it. I will do shoots and get my work out there.

I will do something more with my art. It’s improving, though not quite where it was art. I would love to start selling prints and pieces to people.

Travel. Experiences. Health.

There is no point in wasting time, when there are adventures out there waiting for me. I just need to seize the chances I’m presented with.
